  1. I’ve recently discovered the Uma Aventura books and I love them too! They’re very similar things Enid Blyton, with the whole kids solving a mystery thing, but also how it’s written in a really simple straightforward style. I also love how each book teaches you about history or the culture of a place.
I’ve read Uma Aventura na amazónia, picked simply because the Amazon is cool. It was a print book so I didn’t look anything up, but it was often possible to pick up new words from context, or the authors giving explanations for new animals.
I’m reading Uma Aventura na Madeira now because I’m hoping to make a trip to Madeira this year. I got it in ebook format so I’m enjoying being able to quickly look up the meaning of words, but overall it’s a very easy read and unknown words don’t break my flow too much.
Do you look up every unknown word when reading or do you vary it?

    1. (whoops! Sorry, I just deleted your comment by mistake and had to restore it! Sorry if you got a notification or something. )

Yeah, they’re great, aren’t they? I have Uma Aventura na Madeira lined up next. We went there last year and I’d love to go back, it’s absolutely amazing!

The ebook format makes word look-ups easier, for sure but you’re right that it’s seldom needed for these. I don’t look up every word, depending where I am and how “dense” the book is, and what kind of thing it is. If it’s obviously some kind of bird I might not need to know specifically what kind of bird, but if it’s a verb or something, not understanding it is going to be more of a problem. I am definitely inclined toward laziness though. I think sometimes I’m guilty of feeling like I am understanding everything but really sort of coasting, missing the detail or the “tone” of what I’m reading as the result of accumulated gaps in understanding.
