I just had a look in r/WritestreamPT on Reddit. It’s a forum I posted in more-or-less daily over a period of about two years. I assumed it would have just carried on regardless. When I left, I was having a bit of a crisis of confidence because I felt like I kept making the same mistakes over and over, and since there were only so many Portuguese volunteers around, I was hogging attention that other, less dim learners could have used.
I think the decline had already set in though. There were fewer and fewer teachers working. Even the Brazilian teachers left. People kept going anyway and didn’t seem to be bothered if nobody corrected what they write.
But when I looked today, the only recent posts were from a bot that posts the “Dia de Socializar” message each week. O scrolled down. There hadn’t been a human for 3 months. Even Solanium, a PT-BR learner, with an unbroken streak of 1182 days, hardly ever making a mistake, and so focused that he didn’t even make a big deal when his streak reached 666, just kept on going (I would have planned that post a month in advance I tell you!)… Even he had stopped. And just to twist the knife further, when I had a look at his profile, he has been posting in r/WritestreakES! Wut??? He’s learning Spanish now? I feel betrayed!, 😭
It’s a shame, but i have fond memories of the place. I guess I was lucky enough to be involved when it was in its heyday.

Corrected texts about reddit user flairs. Yes, I know, that sounds enthralling doesn’t it.

Será que é possível nós não-administradores obtermos permissões para alterar os nossos próprios flairs neste subreddit? Sou capaz de mudá-los em vários outros subs mas não posso aqui.
Não importa assim tanto mas talvez haja uma sombra de perturbação obsessiva-compulsiva na minha alma. Quero alterar o meu flair para 💯 em vez de 20 🔥 mas não quero dar mais trabalho aos mods cujo cargo já é um bico-de-obra* a corrigir os meus erros porque apesar de atingir 100 no meu streak ainda não sei nada.

Muito obrigado a quem nos deu a permissão de mudar os nossos próprios flairs como pedi ontem. Já que tenho este poder, sinto-me tentado a utilizá-lo de modo irresponsável. Espero conseguir resistir à vontade de usar um sistema de uma lontrinha por dez textos no streak… Prometo conter-me e manter o sistema existente!

Do You Like Pinar / Colar? Duh!
In the world of social media you’ll occasionally come across the idea of a pinned message or pinned tweet. That’s a message that stays at the top of the page even while new messages are posted.
In Portuguese, this is sometimes described using the word “pinar” which is unfortunate because pinar also means “shag“. I have just made an idiot of myself by suggesting someone shag their message in reddit.
So what’s the right word? Colar? (to glue something) Pregar? (to nail something) no, it’s Afixar (ao topo) apparently. This according to Microsoft’s list of tech terms translated into Portuguese which seems worth bookmarking for later.
r/place
Just popped over to the r/place subreddit, which is a sort of giant collaborative artwork being created by millions of people, and I noticed quite near the middle there are a lot of Portuguese people carving out a little niche for themselves. I strongly approve.
