Vida de Adulta de Raquel Sem Interesse

Li o segundo livro desta autora há 4 meses e tal, e gostei. Este parece-me um livro mais fraco. Admito que não tenho a idade, nem sou do país nem do género, sobre qual ela está a escrever, portanto provavelmente não me devo queixar (!) mas o álbum consistem em BDs curtinhas mas não há nada novo: algumas não têm graça, são apenas “aconteceu isto”… E concordo: Acontece, sim. Há outros que não entendi. O que se passou? O que é esta coisinha no canto do desenho? Mas também há algumas que bateram certo.

Lembra-me a Sarah Anderson, mas também não gosto da Sarah Anderson. Ai, que desmancha-prazeres sou!

Sermão de Santo António aos Peixes

Uma portuguesa que leu este livrinho na escola avisou-me para não ler, mas sou teimoso, e ainda bem porque gostei.
Já li muitos livros religiosos em Inglês durante a minha juventude desperdiçada, portanto o estilo não me assustou, ainda que seja ateu.

A história é uma alegoria que acrescenta pormenores à bem conhecida história de São António, que pregou aos peixes uma vez que os moradores da cidade taparam os ouvidos.

O sermão, que o autor coloca na boca do santo, foi muito relevante à situação social em vigor naquela altura e criticou o papel dos colonizadores e missionários no Brasil (contexto que teria perdido se a minha esposa não me tivesse explicado). Em resumo, gostei bastante mas fiquei contente por terminar depois de 60 páginas. Não preciso de mais!

Enquanto Salazar Dormia…

I’m off reddit these days so I’ve gone feral and all my book reviews for the time being are going to be accompanied by the #uncorrectedportugueseklaxon This one is “Enquanto Salazar Dormia” by Domingos Amaral

Este livro é muito interessante. Já sabia, antes de ler, que Lisboa era um covil de espiões mas quanto mais o enredo desenrolou, mais achava que precisava de mais informações, portanto ouvi um outro audiolivro (em inglês) sobre esta época. Com este como pano de fundo, esta história tornou-se mais viva, com tantas referências à história verdadeira da segunda guerra mundial.

Há imensas cenas de sexo rebuscadas, e cada vez que uma mulher entra no âmbito da história, o narrador avalia o tamanho e a aparência dos seios dela o que se tornou irritante depois de algum tempo, mas apesar disso a história é divertida.

Vacilei entre 3 e quatro estrelas mas acabei por dar 3 porque o desenlace roubou tanta emoção dum filme alheio (o Casablanca, que também aparece na capa) e achei este truque um pouco preguiçoso.

Qual É A Dúvida

I’ve just finished Qual É A Dúvida and I was really impressed. I’d spent a lot of time bogged down in a really tedious, repetitive exercise book beforehand and I could never motivate myself to open it, so switching to this was a real breath of fresh air. It’s got 25-35 questions in every 2 page section. Its purpose is to focus on some of the trickier aspects of grammar that you might have found hard when you learned about them. As such, it isn’t a textbook and doesn’t give very detailed explanation of each topic because it assumes you’ve already learned it and just need to practice some examples to get the hang of the. So you get a super-basic summary of the rule or difference it’s trying to highlight and then it leaves you to fill in the spaces. It covers relatively basic stuff from B1 up into some really twisty grammar for C2 level.

I found it challenging in places, but even in the easy pages, I never really felt like I was wasting my time.

It’s really one of my favourite books so far, and I have marked some of the harder pages to review again later.

I’ll put the first contents page below so you can see what it’s hitting at the intermediate level, but the whole thing spans three pages.

Strong recommendation if you’re intermediate/advanced. And if you’re looking to load up on textbooks, remember I have a special page for that and it’s here.

Lisbon by Neill Lochery

I’ve had the audiobook of Lisbon by Neill Lochery on my listening list for a while now and finally got around to it simply because I had started Enquanto Salazar Dormia by Domingos Amaral And wanted a little more background about wartime Lisbon to give me the context.

I learned a lot! I’d always known Portugal had a slightly odd place In World War 2 History: Salazar, as a fascist, was probably more inclined towards Hitler’s world view, but Portugal and Britain have been allies since way back. I also knew we hadn’t always been good allies (see this post about the portuguese national anthem starting life as a diss track about the treacherous land-stealing British empire).

What I hadn’t realised was how many different schemes and counter-schemes were swirling around the capital, or how delicate was the balance that kept the Iberian peninsula out of the war.

Nor had I any idea that part of Portugal’s reason for distrusting Britain was that Neville Chamberlain had offered Angola to Hitler as part of his appeasement negotiations. Or about the delicate situation regarding Wolfram (Tungsten) mining that was necessary for both sides’ war effirts. At one point, a network of SOE agents had recruiters portuguese sub-agents and poised then to blow up mining infrastructure and assassinate some key people in the event that Portugal was invaded by Spain at the behest of the nazis and there wasn’t a padeira around to hold them back.

It’s absolutely amazing. I love all that stuff.

Embora o foco do livro seja em Portugal, esta questão existe ao nível global, e o autor fala sobre, entre outras coisas, a famosa aldeia dos livreiros, Hay on Wye no país de Gales, que é um dos meus sítios favoritos.

O Filho de Mil Homens – Valter Hugo Mãe.

O Filho de Mil Homens de Valter Hugo Mãe

“Li” este livro com os ouvidos (sempre que digo isto, as pessoas explicam que devo dizer “ouvi”: está bem, mas gosto de dizer “ler com os ouvidos”. Deixem-me fazer as minhas parvoíces de velho!), que tornou-o mais difícil. Geralmente, se não percebo alguma coisa, viro-o de volta e leio as ultimas páginas, mas com um audiolivro, sobretudo enquanto estou a lavar a loiça, não é nada fácil, e pouco a pouco, perdi o fio a meada. O livro conta as histórias de pessoas diversas que se juntam para formar uma família. Entendi basicamente tudo, e gostei dos acontecimentos individuais, as personagens e o estilo do autor, e o fato de ele ter gravado o seu próprio livro, mas conseguiria resumir a história? Dificilmente… Acho que vou voltar a este livro e ler mais uma vez, talvez com os olhos.

O Filho de Mil Homens is available as an audiobook or if you prefer, as an actual paper book from Wook. Don’t worry, although it’s a book from Wook, it’s not “My Booky Wook” by that guy who’s in the news a lot lately. Screw him.

Gente Remota

Esta BD é a terceira das três do mesmo autor que comprei de uma vez, e gostei de todas. Parece-me que ele é um homem que não se importa correr riscos na sua arte. A segunda (que não resumi porque é em inglês) tem um pedófilo como protagonista, e o desta é um racista da velha guarda, que, além de ter opiniões nojentas e/ou patéticas, quando lutava na guerra colonial, cometeu um crime grave. A revelação causa ondas nas vidas dos outros em seu redor. Assim como o segundo, este livro espantou-me, mas não cheguei ao nível de boquiabertice* que senti após fechar a capa d'”O Cuidado dos Pássaros”.

*This is a made-up word of course. Estupefação would be better

O Cuidado Dos Pássaros

Just a quick interlude to discuss this book. It’s one of three i bought by the same author and, unlike the others, it’s mainly in English, but it’s a bilingual edition with portuguese dialogue in notes at the bottom of the grid.

O Cuidado Dos Pássaros

It’s quite a hard read though. The main character is a paedophile who’s trying to get through his life without harming anyone. It’s… An original idea for a book, but if you like your protagonists to be sympathetic people you can relate to you won’t find that here!

The other books I bought by him are Cartas Inglesas, which I reviewed a few days ago and Gente Remota, which I just finished today. I’ll be posting that review in a couple of days from now but spoiler alert) it’s definitely the pick of the crop!
