The free recording of Amor de Perdição I listened to a while ago seems not to exist any more, but I had a dig around and there’s a podcast called Livros Para Ouvir, available in a few places, including on Spotify. It’s no longer active, but there are a few whole books there, all old classics (and, presumably therefore public domain?)
Cuidado Com o Cão é o segundo livro de Rodrigo Guedes de Carvalho que já li e gostei mais do que o primeiro (mas li o primeiro há três anos e tal, e custou-me ouvir um audiolivro inteiro naquela altura!)
O romance conta as histórias de várias pessoas cujos destinos parecem estar interligados, e de quatro cães, que igualmente podem ser o mesmo cão(!)
Comecei o livro há meses mas deixei de ouvir porque não tinha tempo. Voltei ao início em Outubro e retomei a história durante a minha estadia em Portugal. Fez-me companhia durante as horas a caminho entre vários lugares interessantes. O narrador é excelente e gostei dos pensamentos das personagens mas também adorei as divagações sobre as suas obsessões musicais. Explica-se bem os laços que nos ligam aos cantores que nos chamam a atenção.
Recomendo este livro para quem quiser experimentar um audiolivro português que seja mais adulto do que, por exemplo, O Principezinho, mas que não quer sofrer com um narrador que não fala nitidamente. Está tão bem lido que um ouvinte de nível B2 ou mais consegue entender.

You could scoop 3 portuguese language audiobooks for next to nothing, like o Principezinho, A Morte do Papa, o Anibaleitor, o Mistério da Estrada de Sintra, or Portuguese Short Stories. I’ve raved about audiobooks a fair bit, because they’re books, but you can listen to them so what’s not to like? You’ve probably tried audible already but if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? I’ve been a member since the pre-amazon days, when you had to lie and pretend to be American to sign up. I used to download them to a scrappy mo3 player that could only hold one book at a time, and I think it was even dial-up. Oh god!

O Pequeno Livro dos Medos é um livro infantil que está disponível como Audiolivro na livraria Wook. O autor fala, sob a perspetiva de uma criança, sobre o significado da palavra e como nós sentimos esta emoção tão constrangedora. O terceiro capítulo é um conto, lido ao narrador pelo avô dele que foi originalmente escrito para o seu filho (ou seja para o pai do narrador quando era jovem… eh pá, esta frase precisa de uma árvore geneológica para ilustrar estes relacionamentos, não é?).
Sendo um livro infantil, a linguagem é muito fácil em termos da gramática, mas o seu estilo* não é tão simples que se torne aborrecido para leitores mais crescidos. Recomendo para quem nunca tenha lido** um Audiolivro em português, mas queria experimentar.
*I wrote “estilo de escrever” but it sounds redundant since estilo is more specific than “style” (definition 6 here)

It looks like Wook have just put a new crop of Audiobooks on their website. I only noticed because I just went to look for a link to the book I’ve just finished and when I went to the “Literatura” page it was full of softcore erotica. José Saramago was sandwiched between “Sexo no Carro” and “Amarre-me”. Coitodo! Er… I mean Coitado!
Sadly they seem to be mostly Brazilian portuguese so be careful, they’ll damage your grammar as well as your eyesight.
I did spot a new European portuguese book though – or at least one I hadn’t noticed before: they’ve got “O Livro de Desassossego” now. Nice! I’m not sure I dare try and read it as an audiobook though… Maybe later!
Anyway I’ve got guests coming soon, but I’ve made a mental note to spend more time looking around to see if there s anything I fancy.
I’ve had the audiobook of Lisbon by Neill Lochery on my listening list for a while now and finally got around to it simply because I had started Enquanto Salazar Dormia by Domingos Amaral And wanted a little more background about wartime Lisbon to give me the context.
I learned a lot! I’d always known Portugal had a slightly odd place In World War 2 History: Salazar, as a fascist, was probably more inclined towards Hitler’s world view, but Portugal and Britain have been allies since way back. I also knew we hadn’t always been good allies (see this post about the portuguese national anthem starting life as a diss track about the treacherous land-stealing British empire).
What I hadn’t realised was how many different schemes and counter-schemes were swirling around the capital, or how delicate was the balance that kept the Iberian peninsula out of the war.
Nor had I any idea that part of Portugal’s reason for distrusting Britain was that Neville Chamberlain had offered Angola to Hitler as part of his appeasement negotiations. Or about the delicate situation regarding Wolfram (Tungsten) mining that was necessary for both sides’ war effirts. At one point, a network of SOE agents had recruiters portuguese sub-agents and poised then to blow up mining infrastructure and assassinate some key people in the event that Portugal was invaded by Spain at the behest of the nazis and there wasn’t a padeira around to hold them back.
It’s absolutely amazing. I love all that stuff.
Wook seem to have launched themselves in the audiobook market with a few interesting-looking titles. I’ve added a section about them on my Audiobooks Page. If you’re an audio fan, especially if you yearn for more audible Saramago in your life, now is your moment!
“Psicopatas Portugueses” é um livro de Joana Amaral Dias. Além de ser um livro e um audiolivro, o texto foi lançado como podcast e foi assim que o ouvi. A capa do livro tem uma foto dum rosto escondido por uma máscara de hóquei, tipo Jason Voorhees dos filmes “Sexta-feira 13” , mas não é um desses romances de terror que descrevem crimes de tal forma bizarros e ultrajantes que existe uma espécie de diversão perversa, entrelaçada com o choque de assassinatos tão assustadores. Em vez disso, trata-se de histórias de “crime verídico” mais quotidianas. Os contos abordam casos de pessoas que matam por causa de ciúmes incontroláveis, ou simplesmente por cobiça por dinheiro. Até há pessoas com doenças mentais (sem ser psicopatia) que matam elementos das suas próprias famílias de modo sórdida e nojenta. Acho que os fãs deste género podem gostar desta obra. Já eu, nem por isso. Achei-o ligeiramente deprimente e fiquei aliviado quando cheguei ao fim.
Here’s a review of the audiobook of Vidadupla (“Double Life”) by singer, poet, author and rennaissance man Sérgio Godinho. I listened to it on the Bertrand “Biblio” app, but as I mentioned before, it’s a bit unreliable in that it seems to pause itself when the screen dims or… Something… Something isn’t quite right, at least in the Android version, so I had to keep pinging it to wake it up. That’s probably OK at home but it’s a bit annoying if you’re gardening at the same time, as I was. Acabei de “ler” este Audiolivro do Sérgio Godinho hoje. É uma coleção de contos e o vocabulário é bastante fácil para um aluno do meu nível. Mas tinha uns problemas.
É que… A narradora tem uma voz hipnótica portanto (estou envergonhado por admitir) dei por mim a ficar repetidamente distraído* pelo ritmo da leitura e logo depois perdi o fio à meada. Rebobinei a gravação várias vezes mas afinal não apreciei o livro tanto quanto merece. Ou talvez sou eu que não mereço livros bons.
Bem, de qualquer maneira, gostei do que ouvi. Nem sequer sabia que o Senhor Godinho tinha escrito livros. Já ouvi várias músicas dele. É óbvio que é um homem que sabe criar coisas bonitas.
I’m really chuffed to see Livraria Bertrand now has an audiobook section and an app for ebooks and audiobooks. You can find the page here, and it’s a little underdeveloped at the moment, but so was Audible when I first joined so I’m not giving up on it. The link takes you to the front page of the portuguese audio section, but if you look in the menu on the left-hand side you’ll see there are subheadings for history, science, classics and so on, so you can rummage around and see if anything takes your fancy.
The most annoying aspect of it is that it doesn’t have a preview feature so you can’t find out if the reader is European or Brazilian. Some are obvious, but I picked out a couple that I knew seemed like a good bet – O Vendeador de Passados by José Eduardo Agualusa and Vidadupla by Sérgio Godinho and can confirm that they are both european portuguese. Yippee!!! There are a couple of others by Godinho but as for the rest, I dunno. If you sample any, I’d love it if you could tell me what you thought in the comments. Share the knowledge!
